Recently, the US Senate is considering major changes to federal fuel economy regulations, which may impact a policy that significantly reduces gasoline consumption and promotes the development of fuel-efficient vehicles such as the Toyota Prius hybrid. As part of Trump's broad tax and spending bill, Republican senators have proposed changes to the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) rules. If passed, the proposal would eliminate penalties for violating CAFE, effectively abolishing regulations that have, for generations, driven automakers to produce cleaner and more fuel-efficient vehicles. According to the Energy Policy journal, this technology has saved 2 trillion gallons of gasoline over the past 50 years.
